The Swedish car brand’s small crossover EV goes heavy on tech.

Volvo is on the verge of officially pulling the covers off the EX30 subcompact electric-powered crossover. But ahead of its June 7 debut, the brand revealed that this small model comes with next-level safety features.

This upcoming Volvo model goes heavy on safety tech

To be more specific, the upcoming Volvo EX30 will be getting a host of driver-assistive features that make it safer to drive through busy city roads. The first of these is a side-mirror mounted sensor which checks whether a car or cyclist is approaching from the rear. If it detects any, it provides audio and visual warnings.

Next up is an automatic intersection braking system. This is the same one found on the larger Volvo EX90, and it engages the vehicle’s auto brake intervention feature whenever the car detects on-coming traffic while turning left or right. One can imagine that this feature will be helpful when dealing with busy rotundas or intersections in heavily populated cities.

The EX30 can likewise know whether its driver is distracted or drowsy. It does this via a special sensor, which can keep track of a driver’s eyes and facial movements around 13 times per second.

We've got some small news. Meet #VolvoEX30 on 7 June 2023.

While active safety features are all well and good, Volvo also made sure that the EX30 is capable of keeping its occupants safe during a crash. This is thanks to its reinforced pillars and roof. Beyond that, Volvo also designed the car’s structure to protect its batteries in the event of an accident.

Apart from teasers and the safety features mentioned above, little is known about the upcoming Volvo EX30’s mechanical specs.

The brand is also yet to share anything about this upcoming model’s pricing details. When the EX30 EV was confirmed last year, Volvo CEO Jim Rowan did say that it will be the car brand’s affordable entry-level crossover. It will also be available on a subscription basis.
