Geely Emgrand’s twin Proton S70 gets 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating

Thanks to the Proton S70’s advanced driver-assist safety features.

Following its launch for the Malaysian market, the ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (ASEAN NCAP) has officially given the Proton S70 a five-star safety rating. This is interesting even in the context of the Philippine market since the S70 shares a platform with the locally available Geely Emgrand.

Note though, that the results for the S70 don’t entirely carry over to the Geely model as the two do have some stark differences where advanced driver-assist safety features (ADAS) are concerned.

For that matter, only the adult occupant protection (AOP) and child occupant protection (COP) NCAP results might be valid for the Emgrand, specifically, the top-spec Premium trim. This is because that’s the only version that comes with six airbags like the S70 version the car safety organization tested.

Starting with the AOP scores, the S70 received 29.17 out of a perfect score of 32. That’s equivalent to a weighted score of 36.46 out of 40, or five out of five stars. In further breaking the AOP test results down, the sedan showed good protection levels for an adult occupant’s hips, chest, and head during a frontal impact test. Good protection is likewise provided by the vehicle to an adult’s head, neck, and waist during the side impact test.

The COP test for the S70 also netted good results with a score of 43.41 out of 51. That’s equivalent to a weighted score of 17.02 out of 20, or five out of five stars. It was likewise noted that the Malay-spec S70’s child seat anchoring systems were compatible with a good number of child seats from various brands, at least for its left and right second-row seats.

The vehicle also received a weighted score of 15.71 out of 20 for the safety assist assessment and a weighted score of 13.75 out of 20 for the motorcycle safety category. In those tests, those scores are likewise equivalent to five stars.

Of note, the ASEAN NCAP’s safety assist category assessed the effectivity of the S70’s blind-spot detection system, automatic emergency braking in urban and highway settings as well as its ability to detect other road users such as pedestrians. The S70 was noted to have performed well in these tests, but as mentioned above, these ADAS technologies are not present on the Philippine-spec Geely Emgrand.

To sum it up, the Proton S70 received an overall weighted score of 82.95 out of 100. That’s equivalent to an overall five-star safety rating.

On this note, Emgrand buyers in the Philippines can rest easy knowing that this sedan platform is competent in keeping you safe during a crash. We hope though, that future iterations of the Emgrand will be improved with ADAS features as well.
