Upcoming Porsche 911 Dakar underwent over 9,600 km of off-road testing

Like its namesake, this 911 looks tough.

The Porsche 911 Dakar is coming, and to make sure that it lives up to its name, the Bavarian sportscar maker has put it through a tough testing program. The said test spans over 9,600 kilometers of off-road testing over snow, sand, and gravel. Suffice to say, they aren’t pulling any punches with this.

That’s because Porsche wants to get the very best out of the 911 Dakar. The test allows the brand’s engineers to make adjustments to its suspension in particular. And so far, even the two-time world rally champion Walter Röhrl says that he is “absolutely stunned by how well the car performed here on loose surfaces.”

Porsche specifically reported that it kept under control when tackling the glass-like surface of a frozen lake. It also managed to climb 160-foot sand dunes in 45-degree Celsius weather in the Sahara Desert repeatedly. Likewise, it also performed well at the Chateau de Lastours test track, a scenic place with hard and rocky terrain.

But despite its high ground clearance and aggressive all-terrain tires, it still retains roughly the same driving characteristics as a typical Porsche 911 on the road.

As a nod to the 911 that won the Dakar Rally way back in 1984, the upcoming 911 Dakar might just be capable of running the said rally itself. It is the first-ever two-door Porsche to get off-road specs, and it even gets an all-wheel-drive system.

But as much as Porsche fans would want to know more about the Porsche 911 Dakar, no technical details were released as of this writing. No exact details were given regarding its engine, and we aren’t sure how its interior is designed.
