NLEX Corp. to commence Magsaysay Boulevard rehabilitation this month

NLEX Corporation announced that it is set to improve the Magsaysay Boulevard as part of the construction of the NLEX Connector Sta. Mesa section this month.

According to the toll road company, the improvement works include the rehabilitation of the existing eastbound and westbound service roads, reworking the Philippine National Railways (PNR) railroad crossing, relocation of electric posts, and decommissioning of the Magsaysay Flyover.

The goal of the project is to reduce the configuration of the Magsaysay Boulevard to five lanes (currently six) per direction, but widen each lane to around 3,500 meters. This makes it at par with the standard of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). Once completed, the traffic flow in the area is expected to greatly improve.

“The redevelopment project and the NLEX Connector both aim to ease traffic in the metro and improve the flow of vehicles in its surrounding areas,” said NLEX Corporation President and General Manager J. Luigi L. Bautista.

With the number of road works, traffic buildup is expected around the area. But the company assured that traffic marshals will be deployed in the work area to keep traffic moving. Moreover, directional signs and safety devices will be installed at strategic locations to minimize incidents.

“With a traffic management scheme in place, we seek to provide safe and efficient passage to the public while we are undertaking this redevelopment of Magsaysay Boulevard,” added Bautista.

The 3.0-km NLEX Connector Sta. Mesa section, running between España and Sta. Mesa, is one of the two parts of the NLEX Connector project. In our previous report, the other 5.0-km part called the España section is already 80 percent complete, stretching between Caloocan and España.

Upon the completion of the entire NLEX Connector, the expressway is expected to accommodate 35,000 vehicles per day. It also aims to reduce the travel time from the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) to South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) to 20 minutes from the usual two hours.
