Is this the future of the GT-R?

Nissan Motor Corporation has officially taken the covers off the Hyper Force concept car at the ongoing 2023 Japan Mobility Show.

With a sleek and rakish body, the Hyper Force is the brand’s vision of its next tranche of high-performance vehicles. Like the other concept cars within the carmaker’s Hyper lineup, the sports car concept is an emissions-free fully electric model. However, it stands out thanks to its capability of providing “the ultimate in driving pleasure.”

According to Nissan, the Hyper Force outputs up to 1,341 horsepower, while using the brand's e-4ORCE all-wheel-drive system for optimal traction. Those are coupled with a lightweight body that’s mostly made out of carbon fiber. Altogether, these components can result in crisp handling whether it be for racing or just driving on windy mountain roads.

The overall performance of the Hyper Force is hinted at by its eye-catching exterior presented as a more aerodynamic, stylized version of the Nissan GT-R. Its two-tiered front fascia, for instance, can provide strong downforce whilst keeping the car’s internals cool. On the other hand, its rear features an active wing and an equally huge rear diffuser.

The concept vehicle even gets a “plasma actuator” which sounds like something out of a sci-fi novel. But in reality, it’s a newly developed device that can actively control airflow without the use of moving parts. Instead, it uses low-temperature plasma.

Inside, the Hyper Force gets a futuristic cabin that’s filled to the brim with advanced technologies. Thanks to a partnership with Polyphony Digital - the developers of the famous sim-racing game Gran Turismo, the Nissan concept gets a graphical user interface (GUI) that can change to suit a user’s needs.

This GUI has two modes. The first, which gives the interior a red theme, is dubbed the “R mode”. Activating this creates a driver-centric cockpit with four screens surrounding the yoke-type steering wheel that can display air pressure, brake rotor temperatures, and power distribution, among other information crucial for a serious racing driver.

Its “GT” mode meanwhile, turns the cockpit into a relaxing, blue-tinged space. Under this display setting, the car shows the air-conditioning system settings, audio settings, and other things necessary for a pleasurable drive.

Likewise present inside the EV concept is a pair of carbon fiber bucket seats equipped with four-point seatbelts. Furthermore, safety in this concept is supported by an advanced autonomous drive mode that uses an array of sensors and a LIDAR system. According to the brand, this is designed to ensure safety on public roads and even on a race circuit.

Last but not least, the Hyper Force can also provide augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences. The brand claims that its AR may be able to aid drivers in sharpening their skills on real-world race tracks by racing with “digital ghosts” or virtual representations of other cars. Its VR feature meanwhile, can be used when the car is stopped and it provides additional on-board entertainment via games and other online activities.

Nissan hasn’t outright confirmed it yet, but this could be the fully-electric GT-R of the future. One should take that with a grain of salt, but we’re very excited if this concept is the direction a theoretical “R36 GT-R” is heading toward.
