Subaru teases next-gen WRX, PH launch due early 2022

Like its predecessors, it gets a hood scoop.

For the first time ever, Subaru teases the next-generation WRX. On the marque’s official global website, one can see the car parked amidst a mountainous area with a sunset in the background, whilst wrapped by shadow. That said, only the hood scoop of the 2022 WRX is visible.

Besides the fact that the bonnet is keeping with the look of the previous WRX models, the silhouette also suggests that it's going to be a sedan model. Well, at least the first version that will be released anyway.

Of note, this is the WRX version and not the WRX STI version. According to reports, the sportier STI variant will follow suit and so it might look different from the regular WRX. Some are saying that there is actually a chance for the hatch or wagon versions to make a return, but that’s speculation at this point.

The 2.4-liter FA24 engine currently being used by the Subaru BRZ, Toyota GR 86, Subaru Evoltis, Outback, etc.

We do know though that the new WRX will be powered by a 2.4-liter boxer-four engine. We don’t know which engine exactly, but there’s a good chance that it will be the FA24, which is newer than the good old EJ20 that the outgoing model uses. Reports also say that this mill can make up to 260 horsepower and 375 Nm of torque, while the STI version will be capable of producing upwards of 400 horsepower. We hope.

As a side note, the FA24 belongs to the same series of engines that’s currently being used by the new 2022 Subaru BRZ, and the new 2022 Toyota GR 86. It is also being used by the currently available Subaru Evoltis, and many other Subaru models.

And of course, we’re also certain that it will retain the symmetrical all-wheel-drive drivetrain. For transmissions though, we’re also sure that the US market might be getting a six-speed, as well as a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

For some markets, Subaru even released a WRX STI Final Edition to say goodbye to the EJ20 engine

As reported previously, Subaru Philippines mentioned that the next-generation Subaru WRX is indeed coming to the Philippines. We don’t know when exactly, but it's going to happen within the first half of 2022 as announced in a media roundtable we attended last year. The STI will then follow afterwards.

Subaru WRX Launch

The all-new Subaru WRX debuted for the Philippine market in June 2022 as a 2023 model. It was introduced along with the wagon version. Currently, this model has two different variants. There’s the WRX 6MT and the WRX CVT EyeSight.

Subaru WRX Exterior

For exterior equipment, the all-new WRX gets a pair of LED headlamps with auto-leveling, LED front fog lamps, LED taillights, and power-folding side mirrors. The WRX MT and WRX CVT EyeSight then ride on a set of 18-inch Aluminum-alloy wheels.

All trims also come with sports side garnish, a trunk spoiler, and twin-dual tail mufflers. Only the top-spec WRX tS and the mid-spec WRX CVT may come with a power-sliding sunroof.

Subaru WRX Interior

The WRX can seat up to five. It then provides its occupants with fabric or suede seats, and a dual-zone automatic climate control system with rear vents. It also comes with sport pedals, rain-sensing wipers, a leather steering wheel, a push-to-start button, etc.

Technology & Safety Features

For safety, the Subaru WRX’s higher-spec variants are equipped with the EyeSight driver assist suite. This includes autonomous emergency braking, lane centering control, adaptive steering control, and lane departure prevention, among other features.

The WRX also gets a hill-start assist, active torque vectoring, seven airbags, a reverse camera, a driver monitoring system, etc.

Platform & Chassis

The all-new WRX uses the Subaru Global Platform. It shares this with other Subaru Philippine models like the XV, the WRX Wagon, etc.

It then uses a MacPherson strut front suspension and a double-wishbone rear suspension. Disc brakes then handle braking for all four wheels.

Of note, the heaviest WRX variant is the top-spec WRX tS CVT EyeSight, which clocks in at 1,612kg. The lightest meanwhile is the WRX MT, which has a curb weight of 1,515kg.

Engine & Drivetrain

Powering all variants of the Subaru WRX is a 2.4-liter boxer-four turbo engine that can make up to 271 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque. Depending on the trim, it either gets a six-speed manual gearbox or a continuously variable transmission with a paddle shifter manual mode. Like most Subarus, the WRX is an all-wheel-drive vehicle.

As an AWD sports sedan inspired by Rally, the Subaru WRX is a unique model in the local market. The closest competitors are the Mercedes-Benz C-Class 2025 and BMW 3 Series.
