The Lexus LFA is arguably the most coveted model in the brand's portfolio but the Japanese automaker hasn't released a second-generation iteration of it. However, it seems that is about to change as the LFA moniker just came to light once again.
Lexus filed an LFA trademark
In a new document unearthed by Australia's The Drive, Lexus filed a trademark application in the Philippines, the United States, Indonesia, and Israel for the "LFA" badge last August 2023.
It is still unclear what Lexus plans to do with the trademark application. Although, reports suggest the application just may well be an action to protect the moniker from others looking to use it.
If the automaker will revive the nameplate once more, one possibility is through the use of an all-electric powertrain. This alleged spiritual successor unveiled last year could do zero to 100 km/h "in the low two-second range" and offer a range of up to 700 km. Reports suggest this model will come out by 2030.
The Lexus LFA successor could be on the horizon
But there's another potential LFA successor on the horizon with a V8 engine that is most likely hybridized. Dubbed LFR, the mystery model was seen taking a few laps at the Motegi Circuit in Japan about a week ago. It is said to be a road going version of the Toyota GR GT3 Concept, and could be released in 2025 or 2026.
Lexus discontinued the LFA in 2012, producing 500 examples only. It went out with the enthusiast-favorite 4.8-liter V10 built in collaboration with Yamaha. Hopefully, the trademark application is hinting at a potential return of the LFA.
For now, the sports car seat is taken care of by the Lexus RC and LC. Both are made available in the Philippine market, with the latter boasting a more potent 5.0-liter naturally-aspirated V8 good for 471 horsepower and 540 Nm of torque.
We at Philkotse.com will keep an eye on the latest car updates.
