Nagtahan flyover accessible to light vehicles only due to repair works

Infrastructures such as bridges deteriorate over time, which is why regular maintenance is important to ensure its structural integrity. This is the case of the 30-year-old Nagtahan flyover as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced that it will undergo rehabilitation.  

Nagtahan flyover is under repair

The Nagtahan flyover in Sta. Mesa, Manila is up for major repair and strengthening works. To make way for the said repair works, only one lane of the Nagtahan flyover will be accessible to light vehicles. In turn, heavy vehicles are not allowed to use the flyover while rehabilitation works are being conducted along the 467.85-meter standard reinforced concrete bridge structure.  

As such, heavy vehicles going south may take A. Bonifacio Drive, right to Circumferential Road 3, then to Radial Road 10 (R-10). 

Heavy vehicles bound to north, on the other hand, may take Osmeña Highway, then right to Quirino Avenue, left to Quirino Avenue Extension, left to United Nations Avenue, right to Romualdez Street, left to Ayala Boulevard, and then to Roxas Boulevard.

The rehabilitation project will include the removal and replacement of the Nagtahan flyover’s existing steel casing. The agency said that it will also provide the flyover with additional reinforcing steel and protective coating to its piers, and restore affected pavement and sidewalk.   

Villar added that the agency received an allocation of Php 50 million for the Phase 1 of the Nagtahan flyover rehab. He also said that the old structure requires immediate repairs as it has been around since 1991. On the other hand, the agency shared that the Nagtahan flyover rehab will need an additional allocation of Php 70 million for its final Phase 2.

The DPWH said that the Nagtahan flyover is among the 36 priority bridges for repair in Metro Manila. In 2018, the agency announced that a total allocation of Php 1.076 billion worth of projects is set to retrofit, rehabilitate, and replace weak and old bridges in Metro Manila. 

DPWH National Capital Region Director Melvin Navarro said 36 bridges in 10 cities of Metro Manila will be strengthened to conform to the standard design under DPWH design/seismic guidelines, criteria, and specifications.

Aside from the Nagtathan flyover, the DPWH previously said that major rehabilitation will be implemented on the following bridges: 

- Barangca Viaduct (Flyover), 

- Marcos, Marikina, and Nangka Bridges in Marikina City 

- Buting Bridge and C5/Ortigas Interchange in Pasig City 

- Delpan, and Mabini Bridges in Manila City
