MMDA to suspend road works, mall-wide sales for 2023 FIBA World Cup

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced the signing of the memorandum circular No.7 Series 2023 which will suspend road works and any mall-wide sales to reduce traffic for the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Cup 2023. 

Road works along EDSA will be suspended in preparation for the 2023 FIBA World Cup

Road works such as reblocking, utility works, pipe laying, road upgrading, and excavation works won’t be allowed during the course of the event. Likewise, the MMDA will prohibit malls from offering sales to avoid a significant amount of foot traffic at shopping centers.

The suspension will start at midnight on August 17 up to midnight on September 10.

The agency’s goal is to ensure that all affected roads will remain passable, clean, safe, and serviceable to all types of vehicles and pedestrians during the multi-week international basketball competition.

For the uninitiated, the Philippines is one of the hosts of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023; Japan and Indonesia are the other co-hosts. Locally, the event will take place in various venues including the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan, which has a seating capacity of 55,000.

1. EDSA Monumento to SM MOA
2. Kalayaan Avenue, C5 Road to EDSA
3. Along Diokno Boulevard
4. P. Ocampo St., Taft Avenue to Roxas Boulevard
5. Roxas Boulevard, NIA Road to UN Avenue
6. Along Meralco Avenue
7. Ortigas Avenue, EDSA to C5 Road
8. EDSA North Avenue to Agham Road

Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) is a local major sponsor for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023. Part of this is the partnership with the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) and Gilas Pilipinas.

The Japanese automaker is aiding the mobility needs of the national team with the turnover of two Toyota Coaster units to Gilas Pilipinas. Coming with a 29-seating configuration, the Coasters will bring players and coaches to event venues. The suspension of road works and mall sales will help ensure the minibusses will arrive on time.
