If you’ve kept up with the local car news, then you’ve already heard about the return of Great Wall Motor (GWM) to the Philippine market under the Luxuriant Automotive Group. The brand even hosted an event where members of the media got to drive GWM’s upcoming Haval Jolion and Haval H6 hybrid crossovers.
The GWM Cannon is simply known as the GWM Ute in Australia and New Zealand
Fast forward to the present, and GWM has confirmed that it will be releasing a third model locally. This model is known as the GWM cannon, a midsize pickup truck.
Note that the Cannon was also displayed at GWM’s official brand launch event alongside the Haval Jolion and Haval H6. The spotlight, however, was focused on the two aforementioned crossovers. In turn, the Cannon was merely shown, and no details were provided for its local debut.
So with that said, what do we know about the GWM Cannon?
Well, from the looks of it, the Cannon may be able to rival the likes of the Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max, Mitsubishi Strada, Nissan Navara, etc. Like these popular trucks, the global version of the Cannon is a body-on-frame model that assumes a four-door, double-cab body style.

Under the hood of the Cannon is a 2.0-liter turbodiesel paired with an eight-speed or six-speed automatic transmission. The said engine is of GWM’s own design, and at the most, it can produce up to 161 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque.
In several markets, the Cannon comes in 4x2 or 4x4 versions. In the Chinese market, this GWM model is available in an off-road edition version that gets a beefier look, and a base trim variant that comes in a sleeker look.
Being a double cab design, this pickup truck can then seat up to five occupants which are then kept comfortable with leather seating, automatic climate control, and plenty of soft-touch surfaces. Depending on where it's sold, the Cannon also comes with wireless charging and a sizable touchscreen headunit. It has likewise garnered a 5-star rating from the Australian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).
Speaking of which, the GWM cannon is already available in several markets. In China, it is known as the GWM Poer, as the P Series in Thailand and South Africa, as the GWM Ute in Australia and New Zealand, and as the Poer Ruman and Sucan in Brunei
