PCC orders Grab to return Php 5 million to customers

A few days ago, the Philippine Competition Commission or PPC ordered the ride-hailing transport company Grab to return around Php 5.05 million to their customers who have used the company’s app to book their rides and their other services from February 2019 to May 2019.

The PPC ordered Grab last November 14 and they gave the company 60 days to refund their customers.

Where does Grab base its prices? Grab bases its prices depending on demand. The more people are trying to book a particular destination the more the fare will go up. This is especially felt by grab customers during rush or peak hours. This, however, isn’t the first time that the PCC gave Grab a slap on the wrist.

Back in 2018, the Singapore based transport company was also made to pay Php 10 million also for overcharging. This also included a Php 2 per minute of waiting time for customers.

Conditions for the refund

This new “punishment” imposed on Grab is part of a new set of conditions set by the government to protect consumers considering that Grab is enjoying a monopoly in its segment right now. The PPC also placed the company under monitoring for the second time in a row.

The PPC also imposed a condition wherein excess payments made by the rider to Grab are refunded if it “breaches the monthly average fare cap set by the commission.”  These will be distributed through Grabpay within a month of receiving a notice of the breach. This also includes Grab services.

Under this new deal, Grab partner-drivers are also given the “power of choice” to offer their services to other transport network companies and so will not be tied to Grab. Despite that, the company is still required to assist their drives in applying for permits and licenses.

We also hope that another TNVS company will break the monopoly. Please!

Grab Philippines said that they will announce how to get the refunds at least five days before it will be returned to a costumer’s account.
