The Android Automotive OS aims to deliver innovative in-car experiences by introducing improved apps, games, navigation, and functionalities, among others. To further enhance the experience, the system is also bringing in Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play.

While Android Auto seamlessly connects the brand’s users to automotive screens, Android Automotive is natively installed on cars. It has the capability to download apps that will be saved on the screen and receive Over-The-Air (OTA) software updates for further improving user experience even in the coming years.

Google said that Android Auto will be available in about 200 million vehicles worldwide this year.

The system will be available on select cars from Cadillac, Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, Honda, Lincoln, Nissan, Polestar, Renault, and Volvo starting this year. Polestar and Volvo will spearhead the use of the YouTube app in cars, with the latter making it available on the new EX90.

The Volvo EX90 is an all-electric midsize luxury crossover that debuted late last year. It hosts various innovative in-car features such as Google’s new HD map, a comprehensive map that provides highly detailed and up-to-date road information.

Games and entertainment are likewise a key part of the operating system. As such, Google has partnered with various game developers like FRVR, Vector Unit, and Outfit7.

Moreover, partners such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Cisco Webex are working with Google to introduce their apps in the system. This aims to allow passengers to join scheduled meetings without the need to reach for their phones.

While all of those sound well and good, Google is also making sure that it doesn’t distract drivers from keeping an eye on the road. To that end, most of the apps under Android Automotive won’t be available when the vehicle is moving for the safety of road users.

One of the models that recently emerged with an improved infotainment system is the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The German automaker developed a new compatibility layer that allows the installation of third-party apps such as TikTok and Zoom.
