Goodyear is one of the largest tire companies in the world, with good reason. It's one of the world's top four tire manufacturers, and continues to find ways to innovate its tire products to become more sustainable, durable, and performance-ready.
Goodyear's new 70-percent sustainable-material tires
The latest product developed by the American tire manufacturer is the 70-percent sustainable-material tire. As the name suggests, this tire was designed to be as sustainable as possible, an important feature considering that conventional rubber tires pose challenges for disposal, which can be detrimental to the environment.
“We set an ambitious goal in 2020 to create a tire made 100-percent from sustainable materials in 10 years, and our scientists and engineers have made progress towards that goal,” said Goodyear Senior Vice President for Global Operations Chris Helsel, who is also the company’s Chief Technology Officer
“This is an exciting achievement that demonstrates our commitment to increasing the use of sustainable materials in our tires,” he added.
According to Goodyear, the 70-percent sustainable-material tire comes with 13 featured ingredients across nine different tire components.
Innovating tires in the name of sustainability
Three different carbon blacks produced from methane, carbon, and plant-based oil were used to improve the lifespan of the tire and reduce carbon emissions.
Soybean oil and silica were also included in the components. With the use of soybean oil, the tire can adapt to ever-changing road temperatures, an important factor in tire longevity. Meanwhile, a unique variety of silica produced from rice husk ash was used to improve grip and reduce fuel consumption.
Lastly, Goodyear considered recycling plastic bottles and other plastic wastes to produce polyester. This is achieved by reverting the polyester into its base chemicals and reforming them into technical grade polyester.
The 70-percent sustainable-material tire is just one of the many products that Goodyear plans to roll out, with the goal of producing tires that use 100-percent sustainable materials by 2030. Goodyear Philippines managed quite a feat in 2021 by earning a Platinum Award as a Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand. If it markets the new tires here with their impressive environmental benefits, the company just might be able to duplicate that achievement.
