Geely is a huge car company that owns various renowned brands such as Volvo and Lotus. This is why it comes as no surprise whenever the automaker is venturing into new businesses that will expand its range. The latest direction the company is heading into is the electric (EV) pickup trucks.
Radar electric pickup truck patent image
In a report by NetEase Auto, Geely will release an EV pickup truck to be called Radar. The Geely Group has already filed a trademark application for the name twice, one in December 2021 and another in April 2022. It comes with a slogan that translates to “a new and diversified outdoor lifestyle.”
The patent images of the Radar EV truck show a similar design to the brand’s large vehicles such as the Geely Okavango. At the front, the headlight and fog light housings appear to be similar to those in the crossover/MPV, minus the cosmos grille. It looks to be the same case when looking at the rear of the released images.
Geely is joining the EV pickup market
But unlike most EV pickup trucks that use a full-size chassis like the Ford F-150 Lightning and GMC Hummer EV, the Radar will likely join the midsize EV truck segment. This will mark the brand’s first-ever EV pickup truck, which one can say could be Geely’s latest response to the industry’s shift towards electrification.
Geely has already invested 2.42 billion yuan (around Php 18 billion) in a new manufacturing plant in Zibo, Shandong Province, that will be dedicated to the production of this new EV pickup. The company has also prepared a team under the Geely New Commercial Vehicle Co. Ltd. to mainly design, research, and develop future EV pickup trucks.
The company is evolving with the Radar
No official release dates have been revealed. However, reports suggest that the Radar will be out sometime this year. By 2025, Geely is planning to set 5,000 battery swapping outlets across China which will benefit potential EV owners.
