In Europe, you can now rent an EV for P6,000 per month

Travelling at least 500 kilometers monthly only costs an additional P2,000.

While battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sound like a brilliant idea from both a performance and environmental perspective, they can be an expensive proposition for now. Multinational automaker Stellantis has a solution, at least for the European market, by launching BEV rentals priced at just Php 6,000 a month.

Peugeot e-208

Peugeot's e-208 was voted 'Most Desired Electric Car' at the Golden Steering Wheel Awards in North Macedonia

Called “Electric As You Go,” the program allows customers to rent full electric models made by the Stellantis Group. There’s the Peugeot e-208 and Opel Corsa-e subcompact hatchbacks, each with a range of more than 360 kilometers on a full charge. Those with larger space requirements can go for the Opel Mokka-e subcompact crossover that’s rated at up to 370 kilometers.

Interested customers need only pay the base 110 euro (Php 6,304) monthly fee, after the initial downpayment. There’s also a cost per use of 0.07 euro (Php 4.00) per kilometer with a minimum of 500 kilometers, translating to just an additional 35 euro (Php 2,002) per month with no mileage limits. This means that customers only pay the added cost for the distance that the BEV actually travels every 30 days.

Opel Corsa-e

The Opel Corsa-e currently has a waitlist of six to eight months for buyers

Stellantis’ e-Mobility Business Unit was responsible for designing the BEV rental program, in cooperation with PSA Bank and Opel Bank. The automaker calls it a breakthrough project to make BEVs more affordable to a wider market.

Electric As You Go is part of the Stellantis Group’s Dare Forward 2030 long-term strategic plan, which aims to position the company as an industry leader in marketing BEVs and providing aftersales solutions. Moreover, Stellantis is on a mission to slash its carbon footprint by half in 2030, eventually achieving carbon neutrality by 2038.

Opel Mokka-e

Opel completely sold out its stocks of the Mokka-e even before the model was launched in 2020

The program has debuted in France, where customers are eligible when they trade in old gasoline or diesel vehicles in exchange for a BEV. Stellantis says that a planned expansion will see more BEV models offered soon and will include more European countries. Do you think this is something that could work in the Philippines?
