BMW reminds owners to use turn signals

Updated Apr 03, 2023 | Same topic: Automotive Industry Updates

The automaker wants to break the stereotype.

Self-deprecating humor almost always lights up the room as the point that one is trying to avoid is instead put across comically. BMW USA seems to understand the assignment after posting on its official Twitter account these three words, “Use your blinkers.”

What is so funny about something drivers should be doing on the road in the first place? Well, there is this stereotype in the car scene that  BMW drivers generally never use their turn signals when switching lanes. This goes along the lines of Mustang drivers crashing while leaving car meets and Subaru drivers owning a vape as though it comes with the cars.

BMW had blinkers that some drivers found complicated, as the control stalk had to be pushed in the same direction twice to turn it off. However, no official studies have determined that the complex mechanism was the root cause of this oversight. We think that it is nothing but a stereotype only and is for entertainment purposes, especially in an age ruled by memes.

For those who might be interested in knowing how the German marque’s cars’ turn signals work, BMW USA posted a guide on how to use blinkers under its ‘BMW Genius How-To’ series on YouTube. It covers various functions, including the triple turn signal feature.

Locally, BMW Philippines is offering a wide array of models, from sedans to crossovers/SUVs under the X line. One of the latest entries of the company into the local market is the BMW iX, a midsize luxury crossover that runs solely on an electrified powertrain. It is the car brand’s answer to the growing electric vehicle (EV) market.

If you plan to own a Bimmer, you can be assured that it will come with turn signals as standard. However, this shouldn't be a license to perpetuate another stereotype: that of using hazard lights when driving in the rain just to protect your ultimate driving machine.
