Should this have another go in the local market?

While the Suzuki Alto was discontinued in the Philippine lineup, Maruti Suzuki is still keeping the hatchback alive and kicking with the introduction of the all-new Alto K10 in India.

The 2023 Suzuki Alto K10 comes in with changes from the front all the way to the back, including what’s under the hood. You might be even familiar with the performance figures as the new hatchback is using the same power unit as the PH-spec Suzuki Celerio that recently arrived on our shores earlier this year.

Both Suzuki hatchbacks are powered by the same next-generation 1.0-liter K10C 3-cylinder gasoline engine capable of generating 66 horsepower and 89 Nm of torque. The transmission options are also the same, completed by a choice of 5-speed manual transmission and the brand’s automatic gear shift (AGS) transmission.

In terms of size, the new Suzuki Alto K10 sits below the Celerio, measuring 3,530mm in length, 1,490mm in width, and 1,520mm in height. It also has a wheelbase of 2,380mm, which is 85mm longer than the outgoing model. With those numbers in mind, the Celerio is 165mm longer, 165mm wider, and 35mm taller.

The Alto K10 is designed with a modern economy car look as opposed to the retro styling of the ninth-generation Alto launched in its homeland Japan. Inside, the cabin gets a similar layout as the S-Presso. The all-new Alto for the Indian market also has a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, four speakers, and dual front airbags, among others.

It was in 2020 when the Suzuki S-Presso replaced the Alto nameplate, particularly the Alto 800 model, as Suzuki Philippines, Inc.’s (SPH) entry-level model. The S-Presso is doing fairly well in terms of sales in the local market, finishing third in the company’s 2021 sales ranking with 3,429 units sold.

With that being said, one can say that the possibility of the Alto K10 reaching our market is minimal. Plus, SPH is already competing with three hatchback models, namely the Swift, S-Presso, and Celerio. Adding a fourth member to the local hatchback group might end up performing all over the place.
