Is this the next-generation Toyota Land Cruiser Prado?

The brand said an all-new rugged SUV is on the horizon.

Now that Lexus has launched the next-generation GX 550, the rumored all-new iteration of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado could be around the corner. In fact, Toyota just released a teaser of what appears to be an upcoming SUV.

While Toyota didn't reveal significant details, the teaser may be enough for us to think it is the new Land Cruiser Prado, which should be underpinned by the GA-F platform. From the apparent boxy silhouettes of the two SUVs alone, the Japanese automaker might've given too many clues already.

In the press release for the US market, Toyota said, "With 65 years of heritage, you can choose to slow down or reinvent yourself. We chose the latter."

The next-gen Lexus GX, which is essentially the more luxurious counterpart of the Land Cruiser Prado, arrives with a similar boxy exterior seen in the teaser. It departed from the premium-like SUV finish of the outgoing J150 generation in favor of a more rugged-looking SUV aesthetics.

That said, one can expect the all-new Land Cruiser Prado to look more off-road-ready from the factory. If it will follow the GX, the upcoming Toyota full-size SUV could also be offered with an off-road package to further take its ruggedness up a notch.

As mentioned earlier, Toyota hasn't released any details about this mystery model. But it could be powered by a smaller 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 found in the GX, which makes 349 horsepower and 649 Nm of torque. If true, Toyota could tune the engine slightly differently to likely provide more suitable driving dynamics.

Hybridization could also make its way into the SUV as the GX 550 will be getting a 2.4-liter inline-4 turbocharged hybrid engine. The 2.8-liter turbodiesel mild-hybrid engine (MHEV) in the upcoming Toyota Hilux is another option we might see in the SUV.

For now, Toyota concluded the press release with a short "Stay tuned for more updates."

The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is a 7-seater full-size SUV. Toyota Prado price Philippines starts at ₱3,630,000 for the entry-level 4.0 4x4 AT (Gasoline), while the top-of-the-line Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2.8 4x4 AT (Diesel) is priced at ₱4,442,000 Only two variants are available in the local market – one gasoline and one diesel variant.

With the entry-level gas variant, the SUV gets a 4.0-liter 1GR-FE V6 that makes 271 hp and 381 Nm of torque. As for the diesel variant, a 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV turbodiesel engine is used which is the same engine used by other Toyota models such as the Toyota Fortuner. It is capable of generating 201 hp and 500 Nm of torque. Both variants come with a 6-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift as standard.

In terms of dimensions, this Japanese SUV has a length of 4,840 mm, a width of 1,885 mm, and a height of 1,890 mm. Additionally, it has a ground clearance and wheelbase rated at 215 mm and 2,790 mm, respectively. The Land Cruiser Prado is competing against the likes of the Nissan Patrol and Ford Expedition in the Philippine market.
