Toyota Land Cruiser 70 in matte black paint looks like a tough boss car

Toyota Auto Body, a manufacturing subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation, is debuting a mean-looking custom one-off of the Land Cruiser 70 at the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon. In a nutshell, the company made the iconic SUV more ready for off-road adventures, while making it appear as a tough boss of a car thanks to matte black paint.

Black Cruiser 70

Toyota Auto Body's "Black Cruiser 70"

Aptly named the “Black Cruiser 70,” this custom version of the Land Cruiser 70 series gets several off-road enhancements including a snorkel, a winch-compatible metal front bumper, knobby all-terrain tires, as well as a roof rack. Further making it eye-catching are chrome side mirrors and a set of wheels with barrels finished in chrome.

Note this custom one-off is not based on the Land Cruiser 70 version that initially came out in 1984, but instead, the refreshed version launched globally in 2023. It retains the boxy design of the original, but its interior and engine options were modernized.

On that note, this custom 70 series might be using a 2.8-liter turbodiesel capable of making up to 201 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. This is a new engine option for this model that was added during its update, and it's the same mill that powers the higher-spec model of the Toyota Hilux and Fortuner.

The updated Land Cruiser 70 also gets an updated cabin with a new infotainment screen, as well as the Toyota Safety Sense advanced driver assist suite.

Besides the menacing Land Cruiser 70 custom one-off, Toyota Auto Body will also display a classic Land Cruiser J40 model at Tokyo Auto Salon. Based on the pictures provided by the company, this example of the age-old J40 looks like it was restored to its former glory. It also contrasts its black-colored counterpart with a bright yellow paint job.

The 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon will be held at the Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba, Japan from January 12, 2023, to January 14, 2024.
