Suzuki is looking to step up from hybrids to full-fledged electric vehicles (EVs). The automaker is previewing what its future models in the genre might be, starting with a crossover as it premiered the eVX Concept at India’s Auto Expo 2023.
Suzuki introduces the eVX Concept as a preview of its future electric models
“I am delighted to unveil the eVX, our first global strategic EV,” said Suzuki president Toshihiro Suzuki. “At the Suzuki Group, addressing global warming is a priority. We are promoting a range of global measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”
“Suzuki will continue providing valuable products to our customers around the world by optimizing them for the way different people live and drive,” he added.
In a statement, Suzuki said that the eVX combines its “strong 4x4 DNA” with what the latest EVs have to offer, bringing the brand’s 4x4 heritage into the electric era. The vehicle measures 4,300mm long, 1,800mm wide, and 1,600mm high, enjoying a slight size advantage over the current Vitara compact crossover.
The automaker wanted it to have the unmistakable Suzuki look
The company claims that the exterior is designed to be recognizable as a Suzuki vehicle, with a vertical front fascia sporting sharp lines and angles. Body cladding is generously added throughout the vehicle for an off-road-ready look, while the A-pillars feature what look like rear-view cameras in lieu of side mirrors.
Technical details for the eVX are sparse, with Suzuki mentioning only that it has a battery capacity of 60kWh, good for 550 kilometers of range under the modified Indian driving cycle (MIDC).
The production version is scheduled for release by 2025
Suzuki recently signed a joint agreement with Canada-based firm Inmotive to develop a two-speed transmission likely based on Inmotive’s Ingear system, touted as the most efficient of its kind in the world. It will be applied to future Suzuki EVs for developing markets.
The automaker has not confirmed if the eVX’s production version, slated to premiere in 2025, will use the new transmission.
