Upcoming PH-spec Omoda 5 crossover aims to attract young car buyers

Omoda confirms its arrival in the Philippine market, with the Omoda 5 slated to be its first product offering to Filipinos.

The Chinese car brand is dedicated to producing models that will attract young and trendy buyers. O in Omoda indicates surprise, positivity, and energy. It is also derived from the symbol of Oxygen, a necessary element of life. Meanwhile, patterned after the word "modern," MODA means modern and fashionable.

These characteristics will be reflected in the Omoda 5, which will soon be the automaker's entry into the local 5-seater compact crossover market.

From the exterior design alone, the Omoda 5 looks to appeal to those that appreciate style with its frameless grille design, sharp character lines, T-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs), a floating roof design, and fastback bodywork.

For added sportiness to the exterior, red accents can be found from the front to the back, including around the wheels.

The crossover gets dual screens

Inside, Omoda Philippines said that the compact crossover will be equipped with dual 10.25-inch screens, a 4.0 human-machine interface system, and an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). This system is said to offer 16 safe driving assistance functions, enhancing the overall safety performance of the vehicle.

In the safety department, the Omoda 5 managed to score a 5-star rating at the Euro New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP).

The engine specifications for the PH-spec model are yet to be disclosed. But looking at the global market, the Omoda 5 is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine capable of generating 144 horsepower and 230 Nm of torque. It sends power to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Omoda mentioned that it will formally launch its operations in the country sometime this year. Based on our previous report, the crossover could be priced under Php 1.5 million.

This vehicle aims to attract young car buyers

A month ago, we speculated that Omoda will make an appearance at the upcoming Manila International Auto Show (MIAS). But that doesn’t appear to be the case as the brand isn’t included in the recently-released list of participating vehicle brands.

Jetour, Omoda’s fellow car brand under the Chery umbrella, is one of the enlisted brands for the auto show. While Omoda aims to appeal to young car buyers, Jetour looks to provide budget-friendly crossovers and SUVs.
