Another player is joining the next-generation automotive infotainment system market as Nvidia partnered with Taiwanese company MediaTek to bring artificial intelligence (AI) and gaming to cars.
Nvidia is developing next-gen car infotainment systems with new partner MediaTek
The partnership aims to develop system-on-chips (SoCs) powered by Nvidia GPU chipsets featuring Nvidia’s AI and graphics for automotive applications. An SoC integrates all computer components on a single platform, allowing car infotainment systems to be installed without taking up so much cabin space.
“Nvidia is a global pioneer and industry leader in AI and computing. Through a special collaboration between us and Nvidia, we aim to provide a one-of-a-kind solution for the future of software-defined vehicles that require high computing power,” said MediaTek’s Vice Chairman and CEO Rick Tsai.
Nvidia and MediaTek will also develop connected services, enabling next-gen infotainment system functions including improved safety and security. It will likewise bolster the California-based tech company’s Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), making in-car experiences smarter than ever.
The new systems could be out by 2025
One automaker expected to benefit from the technology is Jaguar Land Rover. Last year, the British car company partnered with Nvidia to develop next-gen automated driving systems and AI-enabled services. The upcoming SoC products are expected to arrive in-car infotainment systems in 2025.
“AI and Nvidia’s accelerated computing will accelerate the transformation of the entire automotive industry. MediaTek’s industry-leading SoCs combined with Nvidia’s GPU and AI software technologies will enable new user experiences, enhanced safety, and new connected services in all segments of the automotive market,” said Nvidia Founder and CEO Jensen Huang.
BMW is also one of the players in the in-car gaming market as it introduced multiplayer games in the next-generation 5 Series. It allows games such as Go Kart Go and Overcooked to be played via smartphones. Google is also set to entertain passengers with gaming experiences through the new Android Automotive OS, which will arrive to select cars from Honda, Nissan, and Ford, among others.
