It is expected to come out more rigid and lighter.

The Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform is steadily being integrated into Toyota’s compact city car models such as the Raize and Avanza. Now, reports suggest that the Toyota Vios will follow suit as an all-new model of the subcompact sedan is expected to come out.

In a report by headlightmag, the next-generation Toyota Vios will be launched first in Thailand in the third quarter of 2023 under the DNGA platform. It is expected to improve the vehicle’s rigidity and handling, as well as reduce weight which can make it even more efficient and comfortable.

The report states that the new appearance of the all-new Vios will be taken from the Daihatsu DN F-Sedan Concept. It was unveiled at the 2017 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show. This concept gives off a more modern take on the design as compared to the current version, which could appeal to more car buyers.

Under the hood, the new subcompact sedan is expected to use a 1.2-liter DOHC 4-cylinder gasoline engine with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Toyota will also reportedly launch a 1.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine for the Vios by next year.

If the said engine options will also be offered in the PH-spec Vios, then the current 1.3-liter 1NR-FE and 1.5-liter 2NR-FE gasoline could be discontinued from the sedan’s range. But axing those two engines for the PH-spec Vios is unlikely since both power units are also found in the Avanza. Besides, nothing is official just yet as of this writing.

Once the Japanese marque confirms that the next-gen Toyota Vios will be based on a Daihatsu, the new model will join the Wigo, Rush, Raize, and Avanza as the rebadged Daihatsu cars in the Philippine lineup. It will be a significant update for the nameplate as the current third-gen version was released locally in 2013.
