The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is suspending the 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. number coding scheme on April 5, 2023, Holy Wednesday.
FYI
The agency has decided to suspend the afternoon/evening number coding on April 5 to give more flexibility for motorists or individuals who will go home to their respective provinces this Holy Week.
The MMDA did remind that the number coding scheme will be suspended for the duration of the 2023 Holy Week until April 10, which is a regular holiday in observance of Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor). The said holiday is traditionally observed on April 9, which falls on a Sunday. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared it to be moved on Monday, April 10.
"The commemoration of Araw ng Kagitingan (April 9) which is a regular holiday falls on a Sunday for the year 2023. To enable our countrymen to avail of the benefits of a longer weekend, Monday, 10 April 2023, in lieu of Sunday, 9 April 2023, may be declared as a non-working holiday,” stated in Presidential Proclamation No. 90.
MMDA to have Multi-Agency Command Center for 2023 Holy Week
Meanwhile, the MMDA has set up a multi-agency command center (MACC) for this year’s Holy Week. As previously reported, the MMDA plans to activate the MACC starting today, April 3.
The MACC’s goal is to have a faster and more coordinated traffic management response. This can be achieved through the joint effort of several government agencies including the MMDA, Department of Transportation (DOTr), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), and Land Transportation Office (LTO).
The Inter-Agency Council for Traffic, Philippine National Police, and local government units are also part of MMDA’s MACC.
MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Don Artes
Through the MACC, the MMDA believes that monitoring the status of key transport hubs and major roads will be easier and more coordinated.
“Through this inter-agency action center, we can monitor real-time updates on bus terminals across Metro Manila to ensure safer travel of the commuting public and orderly traffic flow in our roads as we observe the Holy Week,” MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Don Artes said.
