Tire companies are developing their respective products to adapt to the changing automotive industry that is influenced by electric vehicles (EV). Michelin is among the tire brands that aim to offer the best product with its E Primacy tires.
Michelin E Primacy
The Michelin E Primacy tires have been in the market for about two years now. It is a tire that’s specifically developed for EVs, featuring low rolling resistance to maximize battery range.
To put things in perspective, EVs require a different tire design since it weighs heavier than vehicles with internal combustion engines due to the battery packs. The instant torque from the EV’s electric motors also requires a different tire design for a longer lifespan.
As such, the said factors are what Michelin had in mind when developing its E Primacy tire range, which is said to increase the EV battery range by up to 50 kilometers. This was shared by Michelin senior vice president Bruno De Feraudy in an interview with CarExpert at the company’s research and development facility at Clermont Ferrand in France.
Michelin E Primacy tire offers low rolling resistance
“If you take a specific EV tire you will increase your battery range by 30 to 50 kilometers, which is not bad,” De Feraudy said.
“That’s why we’ve launched a new range of products which are E Primacy. They are a range which are specifically tuned for electric vehicles,” De Feraudy added.
Tires fitted to EVs require to have lower rolling resistance than the standard tires. The reason for such is to be able to yield less friction when the EV is cruising on the road. The reduced or lower rolling resistance will allow the EV to use less power from its battery pack, which results in better range.
Hyundai Motor Group and Michelin team up to develop next-gen tires for electric vehicles
Last June 2022, Michelin partnered with Hyundai Motor Group to develop next-generation tires for EVs. The two companies agreed to jointly develop eco-friendly tires with the capability and durability to withstand the load from the battery packs offering a longer driving range. It will also be looking into analyzing tire wear, tire load, and road friction to further improve ride comfort.
