The brand aims to completely phase out the use of leather.

The Kia EV9 debuted as the Korean automaker’s first three-row electric SUV, which means that it boasts electric vehicle (EV) advantages like zero tailpipe emissions. But that isn’t the only feature that the EV brings to expand the brand’s sustainability efforts.

Here is the list of 10 sustainability items in the Kia EV9:

  1. Bioplastic – this material is used from the dashboard and console to the pillars and garnishes.
  2. Post-Consumer Material (PCM) Plastic – this is used for the door garnishes.
  3. Bio PU – the seats and interior coverings use this material.
  4. Recycled PET Fabric – this material can be found on the seats, headliner, sun visor, garnish, and headrests.
  5. Recycled PET Carpet – the cabin floors are made from recycled PET and fishing nets.
  6. Bio PU Foam – the headrests use this material.
  7. Bio Paint – this can be found on the door switch panels.
  8. BTX-free Paint – the EV9 uses BTX-free paints in the interior.
  9. Recycled PET Yarn – more than 70 recycled PET bottles are used across all PET items.
  10. Recycled PET Felt – this can be found on the luggage board.

The Kia EV9 isn’t the first model to use sustainability items as the 2014 Soul EV was already designed with bioplastic and sugarcane bio-fiber. Kia looks to further scale up its sustainability efforts by adopting the aforementioned materials to its future models. But before that happens, the company will phase out the use of leather in all-new products first.
