The Italian automaker did make its return to motorsports last year when it joined the 2023 Formula E season through a partnership with Venturi Racing. Now, the brand is looking to make history at the GT Championship with the Maserati GT2.

Maserati test driver Andrea Bertolini has taken the GT2 at the Parma circuit for its shakedown. The camouflaged race car went around the course with a twin-turbo Nettuno V6 engine. While the road car gets 621 horsepower and 729 Nm of torque, the modified version is expected to make more. As of this writing though, the official power figures for the GT2 are yet to be undisclosed.

The most notable improvement found aboard the GT2 includes the all-new patented Maserati Twin Combustion (MTC) technology that’s based on F1 engines. Also worth mentioning is the race-bred Maserati’s ultra-light carbon fiber central monocoque, and its lightweight full composite bodywork. These give the car an excellent power-to-weight ratio, which is important for clocking fast laps.

Other mechanical specs include an adjustable rear wing, quick-release removable bodywork, full-electric power steering, adjustable shock absorbers, adjustable anti-roll bars, and a 6-speed sequential racing gearbox with paddle shifters.

Meanwhile, the interior features a carbon fiber dashboard with a 10-inch screen that will display essential race details. The cabin is said to be complemented in the bodywork by the Maserati Corse-specific paint and livery option (Blu Infinito).

Maserati will unveil the GT2 at the 24 Hours of Spa in Belgium at the end of June through the GT World Challenge Europe race series.

“The first few days are always quite unique, even more so for me when I was fortunate enough to bring Maserati to success at the GT1 World Championships, where I won four titles. We are now about to get back on track with yet another wonderful car,” said Maserati test driver Andrea Bertolini.

“In the last few months, we’ve been working intensively in the simulator, courtesy of the commitment of a fantastic team. I’d like to thank them, and the most positive aspect is that to follow these first few days, we’re making it all a reality is to the very greatest extent. We have an intense series of test days ahead of us, to get us ready to get back on track,” added Bertolini.

Coming in June

The road-legal Maserati MC20 which forms the basis for the track-only GT2 arrived on our shores in late 2022. However, the first three locally available units have already been sold. So if you want to buy the MC20, you’ll have to contend with a six-month to a one-and-a-half-year-long waiting list.
