Ferrari will reportedly strengthen its electrification efforts by building a new and dedicated electric vehicle (EV) facility in Maranello.
The Italian automaker could build a new production line for electrified models
In a report by Bloomberg, Ferrari has acquired a space in Maranello that will focus on producing electrified models, as well as developing EV technologies. If true, it will be the third production line in its home facility. Ferrari Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Benedetto Vigna is expected to discuss its EV strategy on June 16.
The new EV facility should aid the production of the brand’s electrified models including the Ferrari 296 GTB. It is a hybrid supercar that uses a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine with an electric motor between the engine and the gearbox. This powertrain promises to deliver 818 horsepower.
Moreover, the Prancing Horse recently introduced the 296 GTS (Grand Turismo Spider). As the designation suggests, the model is installed with a retractable roof, perfect for those who would like to enjoy the open roads while experiencing what the unique V6 hybrid setup can offer.
Ferrari SF90 Stradale
The Ferrari SF90 Stradale is also expected to join the new production line as it is equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain (PHEV). Under the hood is a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine paired with three electric motors, boasting 986 horsepower. An EV range of 26 km is also in the supercar’s bag of tricks.
Soon, the brand’s first-ever SUV called Purosangue will be expanding its product lineup. Reports suggest that the upcoming SUV will be available with a hybrid setup consisting of a V8 engine. This could mean that it is one of the many Ferrari models that will be manufactured in the new Maranello plant.
This news was reported amid Italy’s plea for excluding supercar makers such as Ferrari from the 2035 ban on cars running on internal combustion engines (ICEs). The new EV facility might be the Prancing Horse’s answer to the industry’s shift to electrification.
