European-spec Toyota Corolla 2020 still comes with the 1.6L engine but more power

The Toyota Corolla 2020 seems to be the only compact sedan that is still powered by a 1.6L mill.

These days, finding a 1.6L engine in the compact sedan segment is not an easy task. Now, most of the sedans on the market are powered by 2.0-liters, 1.8-liters or even turbocharged small displacement mills.

However, there is a compact sedan that still comes with the 1.6L - nothing else, the next-gen European-spec Toyota Corolla 2020. The engine is dubbed Valvematic and it is a bit more powerful than the standard 1.6L. It is now capable of cranking out 130 hp and 159 Nm of torque, mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. It gets a top speed of 200 km/h, can do 100 km/h in 9.7s.

In the global market, the mill is called the 1ZR-FAE and it has actually been available in Europe since 2010. It has also been offered for the base-version Corollas over there since. So, the 1.6L engine is not strange at all but at least, with the Valvematic unit, it is now stronger.

At present, we can’t conclude whether the Philippine-spec Toyota Corolla 2020 will receive the new 1.6L engine or not. However, we truly hope that the Japanese carmaker will bring it to our market for the sake of better efficiency and more power.
