DeLorean is back in the future with all-new Alpha5 EV

And boy, the future is looking good.

Recently, the DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) has unveiled a reimagining of the DMC-12. You know, that iconic car from the Back to the Future series of films. This one though heralds a new page in the DeLorean name, as it represents what the revived DMC envisions as the future of mobility. And boy, does it look slick.

The DeLorean Alpha5

Dubbed as the Alpha5, its design is clearly a fresh new take on the old DMC-12. Italdesign, the design house responsible for this new car’s look, made several clear nods to the iconic DMC-12.

For instance, its silhouette tapers to the front and towards the rear. Moreover, it retains the iconic gull-wing doors, and some rear louvers on its downward-curving rear section. It even sports a wheel design that somewhat resembles the one used on the famous older version.

As a contemporary model though, the DeLorean Alpha5 as a whole is a very aerodynamic-looking vehicle combining muscular elements like deep character lines and plenty of smooth, liquid-like edges. In fact, it even has an estimated drag coefficient of 0.23. That’s roughly the same as the Tesla Model 3.

Of course it has gullwing doors

Inside, the Alpha5 offers individual, bolstered seats for up to four occupants. It also comes with a slick-looking dashboard that bears a large digital gauge cluster, as well as a smaller central infotainment system. The brand has yet to share anything about its interior features, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it offers a smorgasbord of high-tech gadgets and comfort-providing bits.

For propulsion, the new Alpha5 uses an all-electric powertrain. Like its interior, DMC has yet to release the exact specs for this. It has, however, released some performance figures for the Alpha5 “base performance model”.

Specifically, the entry-level Alpha5 has an estimated range of around 482 kilometers. This means that it might be better than the Tesla Model 3 base model’s range of 438 kilometers.

DMC also claims that it has a 0-100 km/h time of 2.99 seconds. In this regard, it beats the aforementioned popular Tesla model which in turn is capable of a 0-100 km/h time of 5.3 seconds. It isn’t as lightning quick as the Model S Plaid mind you, but do remember again that those figures above for the Alpha5 is just for the base variant.

As one can see, not much is known about the DeLorean Alpha5 for now. The brand also hasn’t released any pricing details, though its website is now accepting reservations for the U.S. market.

It will however, be making an appearance at the Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance sometime in August. By then, more information about this new model might come to light. So if you want to learn more about the Alpha5, be sure to keep it here on Philkotse
