DeLorean making a comeback as new EV sports car

It seems that DMC is coming back to the future.

The DeLorean Motor Company, or DMC for short, is making a huge comeback. And no, we aren’t talking about another batch of the old, flawed, but iconic DeLorean coupe from DMC Texas. Instead, it will be revived as an electric-powered sports car.

The DMC even released a teaser video. Check it out:

The Future was Never Promised

From the 15-second video, one can see that the iconic gullwing doors will of course make a return. The front end also has this LED strip which illuminates for only a few seconds. We can also see from the silhouette of the car that it features the wide haunches of a performance car combined with a muscular-looking hood.

The rest of the car however is shrouded in shadow. Besides the said teaser, there are virtually no details about the car’s powertrain, its interior, or its chassis. Then again, we can expect that it will bear virtually no relation to the old DeLorean that we all know and love.

For those who aren’t familiar with the DeLorean (too young or living under a rock), it became a cultural icon when it starred in the “Back to the Future” hit sci-fi film series. In the said film, it was Marty McFly and Doc Brown’s time machine.

In the real world, the DeLorean has had a tumultuous history. At launch, it had many mechanical gremlins and oddities. The biggest of these was an issue with its alternator where it could not provide sufficient power to the car whenever all of its lights and electricals were on.

The new DeLorean will be designed by Italdesign

The car itself was also slow due to its underpowered but heavy V6 engine. Reports also say that it handled like a boat. With that, the DeLorean was quite far from the initial vision John DeLorean had for the said model: an agile but luxurious two-seater sports car that can carve mountain roads.

Hopefully, this new DeLorean will live up to what the old one was meant to be. Then again, don’t count on the brushed aluminum paint job to make a return though.
