The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced that it is on track to open the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge in the first quarter (Q1) of 2022. As of this writing, the project is now 81-percent completed, a steady improvement in comparison to the 77-percent completion from our previous report last month.
The ongoing construction of the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge
With a project cost of P3.39-billion, the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge is a 680-meter bridge that will connect Intramuros at Solana Street and Riverside Drive and Binondo at San Fernando Bridge with a viaduct structure over Estero de Binondo. It is financed by a government aid grant from the People’s Republic of China.
Ongoing activities include the construction of the massive foundation of up-ramp in Magallanes-Riverside Drive, the down-ramp in Solana Street at Intramuros side, and the up-ramp at San Fernando Street. The government agency is also requesting for immediate orientation of 37 kV and 115 kV high tension cables alongside Estero de Binondo.
Concerned agencies are close to wrapping up the project
Moreover, DPWH Undersecretary for Unified Project Management Office (UPMO) Emil K. Sadain said that the progress of work will hasten with the expected arrival of the steel box girder component for the ramps by this third week of October.
“Once the supply of fabricated girders arrived, immediate launching will be done on our completed piers and the already available precast slab will be installed to complete the ramps,” said Undersecretary Sadain.
Upon completion, the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge will be cutting the travel time between the two busy districts of Intramuros and Binondo. According to the DOTr, the bridge project is expected to accommodate around 30,000 vehicles daily.
Traffic in Manila should improve
The Binondo-Intramuros Bridge will also go hand-in-hand with the recently completed BGC-Ortigas Link Bridge in alleviating the infamous traffic condition in Metro Manila. With the two bridges, DPWH’s 2022 vision of having every city in Metro Manila be 15 to 20 minutes away is slowly seeing daylight.
