Road safety is an important consideration in marketing vehicles, whether it’s a premium nameplate or a more budget-oriented brand. For 10 years now, the New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP) has been making sure that models sold in our region meet established safety standards for customers.

Based in Malaysia, the organization recently celebratesd a decade of existence. The event attended by representatives from various vehicle manufacturers and suppliers. Vehicle safety demonstrations were conducted on anti-lock braking (ABS) and autonomous emergency braking (AEB), two technologies that have become standard on new models as a result of ASEAN NCAP’s efforts.

But the highlight of the celebrations was the Decade of Safer Vehicle Awards, where ASEAN NCAP recognized the car brands who have consistently scored high in crash safety tests in the last 10 years. Not surprisingly, among them are three Japanese brands: Toyota, Honda, and Nissan.

“When we first began our work in 2011, there were not many people who had such high confidence in us. We heard people say that we will only last for three months,” narrated ASEAN NCAP Secretary General Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim. “Now I’m proud to see all our hard work have resulted in astounding achievements and we are making significant impact to the automotive industry.”

Since its founding in 2011, ASEAN NCAP has produced 137 ratings spanning 110 tested 110 models and variants. The latest roadmap for 2021-2025, the organization will be emphasizing four assessment domains: Adult Occupant Protection, Child occupant Protection, Safety Assist, and Motorcyclist Safety
