Apple has introduced new features for the upcoming iOS 17 at the 2023 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). For us car fans, the new SharePlay is probably the most significant update we need to know about.

SharePlay will allow multiple users to queue music in cars

According to the California-based tech company, SharePlay will allow all passengers to queue music using their own smartphones via Apple CarPlay. This means passengers don’t need to pass the one connected phone or aux cord anymore.

What’s more interesting is SharePlay doesn’t require an Apple Music subscription. Not only does this make it more convenient for passengers but also safer.

But we still have to see which music platforms would be enabled for SharePlay. If Apple plans to keep it exclusive, then only the native Apple Music would allow multiple users to queue songs. Factors such as who gets to play or pause and reorder the queue are also yet to be clarified.

The new SharePlay update will be more convenient for passengers

In addition to the more seamless music queuing in cars, the new update will also allow Maps to find electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. The company remains mum regarding more in-depth details but one can expect this will be available in the United States first.

The upcoming Maps update will also allow users to download a specific area and access turn-by-turn navigation while offline. Apple is expected to release the iOS 17 update sometime this September 2023.

A more seamless experience is around the corner for Apple CarPlay users

The company is rivaling Google, which works on developing Android Auto. At the Google I/O 2023 event held last month, Google announced the Android Automotive OS (Operating System) looks to deliver innovative in-car experiences by introducing improved apps, games, navigation, and functionalities, among others.

Here in the Philippine market, more production models are getting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. The Suzuki S-Presso is one of the latest to be offered with the said connectivity features, proving that even relatively affordable cars are becoming more advanced.
