This add-on package gives the midsize sedan a sporty presence.

Sportiness is hardly the first thing that comes to mind when the Toyota Camry is mentioned. For the 2023 model year, the automaker hopes to alter that perception even slightly as it releases the Nightshade Special Edition for its midsize sedan.

The Midnight Blue color is a new addition for the 2023 Toyota Camry Nightshade Special Edition

Nightshade is intended as an affordable factory designer package, with the Camry among the first to offer it in 2019. In the U.S. market, Nightshade variants are now available on the Corolla, Corolla Hatchback, Prius, Avalon Hybrid, C-HR, Sequoia, and Tacoma as well. Toyota says the Camry Nightshade edition accounted for five percent of the model’s sales in 2021, expected to go up to seven percent for 2022.

Sounds like a big deal, so what exactly does the 2023 Camry Nightshade Special Edition bring? These are primarily in the form of blacked-out trim pieces. There’s a black front grille with Sport Mesh inserts lifted from the Camry TRD. This is complemented by black accents on the headlamps and tail lamps.

In between, black trim can also be found on the mirror caps, door handles, sharkfin antenna, and badges, topped off by a black rear spoiler. New for 2023 is a set of 19-inch alloy wheels rendered in a matte bronze aluminum finish, which complements any of the three available color choices for the Nightshade edition: Midnight Black, White, and Reservoir Blue.

Interior bits from the regular Camry are carried over, apart from black leatherette seats and an 8-inch touchscreen head unit which are standard on the Nightshade variant.

The Nightshade edition is positioned between the Camry’s SE and XSE trim levels. All Camry Nightshade versions have front-wheel or all-wheel-drive along with 2.5-liter gasoline and hybrid powertrains, even carrying over the SE’s sport-tuned suspension. Only the 3.5-liter V6-equipped Camry does not come with an equivalent Nightshade trim.

While Toyota will announce pricing information later in the year, the Nightshade package for the 2023 Toyota Camry is expected to stay close to its current $700 (Php 36,700) cost. Will the Nightshade option be a good addition to Philippine-spec units of the Toyota Camry?
