We know, putting on a steering wheel cover can be frustrating at times.

Did you know that the first steering wheel ever recorded was in 1894? But, it wasn’t until 1898 that steering wheels were introduced as a standard feature in some cars.

A steering wheel is one of the most important components we use in a car. This is used to control the direction our cars go to. In fact, it is the longest thing we hold on to when we are driving.

We believe that it is just right for this essential component to be as comfortable and functional as possible when driving our cars.

With that said, there’s a car accessory that can improve your steering wheel further – steering wheel covers.

Steering wheel covers can add comfort and grip when you are making turns or staying on the lane. The last thing we want is you slipping your hands from your steering wheel. Plus, adding a cover prevents damage from occurring on your steering wheel itself.

Here are the questions you need to answer before buying a steering wheel cover.

1. What size is my steering wheel?

We know how frustrating it is to buy something and learn afterward that it doesn’t fit. There are two measurements that you need in order for you to get started before purchasing a steering wheel cover in the Philippines.

Diameter

This is a very important measurement you need to obtain. The average steering wheel size ranges from 14 inches to 17.5 inches in diameter. Keep in mind that measurements may vary depending on your car so it’s better to get the specific diameter of your car. To get the right measurement, place a tape measure and place it from one side to the other.

Thickness

The second measurement you need to get is your steering wheel’s grip circumference. To measure, wrap a tape measure around your steering wheel to determine its thickness. The average thickness of a steering wheel grip ranges from 2 inches to 4.5 inches – but again, it may be different on your car so better check it yourself.

The market of steering wheel covers is huge. There are so many types with different qualities and price tags. Another fun thing in adding steering wheel cover is it adds aesthetics inside your car. Here are some of the steering wheel cover you might want to know before getting one yourself.

Cloth

If you are a fan of colorful steering wheel covers, then cloth best suits you. You can even make one of these at home if you have faux fleece, faux wool, or even just unused cloths. This type of cloth is best used in cold environments.

Leather

Leather, in general, is known as durable and reliable material. Putting a leather steering wheel cover in your car would provide you good grip and add a luxurious design overall.

However, this is an expensive option, but if you have the cash then we recommend you to get yourself one because leather covers are the best and popular choice.

Rubber

As the name suggests, it provides the best grip among the five steering wheel cover choices. Rubber covers are not as durable as synthetic and leather cover, but the good side is this type of cover is resistant to all weather changes.

Synthetic

This includes microfiber leather and PU leather. Comparing a synthetic to leather cover, a leather cover lasts longer than synthetic, but with a synthetic steering wheel cover option, you can get more color options.

Wooden

That’s right, wooden steering wheel covers. This type of steering wheel cover gives your car interior a classic or vintage look. Most wooden steering wheel covers are custom made and it is not adjustable, unlike the other four options.

If you happen to choose this cover, you might want to be more careful with it because this cover tends to fade especially with the frequent exposure to the sun.

3. How I can easily put on the steering cover by myself?

Installing your newly bought steering wheel cover can really be difficult at first. You may think that it doesn’t fit since most steering wheels have a tight fit.

But if you have the correct measurements of your steering wheel size and cover size, then a little effort and patience will be needed to make a steering wheel cover fit.

1. The first step is to wipe down the steering wheel with a vinyl cleaner. You don’t want any bacteria or mold forming underneath your steering wheel cover after installation – as they can damage it.

2. This is a very important trick – blow-dry your newly bought steering wheel cover before installing. The heat will help your steering wheel to soften and be stretched for a faster and more efficient installation. You can do this for at least five minutes, or until you feel that your steering wheel is way more loosened up than when you first got it.

3. Remember to straighten your steering wheel first and adjust your seat to a comfortable position because the installation process can take a while. Always start at the top of the steering wheel. Keep in mind that most steering wheels have an indication as to where the top or bottom part should be placed.

4. Once you finished the top half of the steering wheel, you might want to use both hands in installing your cover. Keep one hand on the finished part so you can prevent the cover from slipping and having to redo it all over again.

5. The last step is to pull the steering wheel cover from the bottom with an excessive amount of force because the bottom part is the most difficult part to install. You can use a lubricant if you feel like you need an extra boost. Just remember to not be frustrated and be patient. Surely, your overall steering wheel will look better and provide more comfort while driving.
