Recently, Toyota Motor Philippines brought in its own entry to the ever-competitive subcompact crossover market. It’s the Toyota Raize, a handsome-looking crossover based on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture.

So, how does Toyota Philippines’ new model fare against the likes of the Geely Coolray? To find out, we’ll be comparing the top-spec Toyota Raize 1.0 Turbo CVT against the Coolray Premium 1.5 DCT as both of these trims are priced above the Php 1 million mark.
Toyota Raize vs Geely Coolray Premium: Exterior
To kick off this comparo, let’s talk about their dimensions. For the Toyota Raize, it has a length of 4,030mm, a width of 1,710mm, and a height of 1,605mm. It then has a wheelbase length of 2,525mm, and a ground clearance of 200mm.

Compare that to the Coolray, which comes with a length of 4,330mm, a width of 1,795mm, a height of 1,609mm, and a wheelbase length of 2,600m. The Geely model also has 196mm of ground clearance.

Based on the figures, the Coolray is significantly longer than the Raize. It also has a bit more wheelbase length. The differences in ground clearance and width, however, are minimal between the two crossovers.
The Geely Coolray
For exterior equipment, both the Raize 1.0 Turbo and the Coolray Premium come standard with LED taillights and front fog lamps. The Geely model however does come with a larger 18-inch set of alloy wheels, while the Toyota model rides on a 17-inch set.

In turn, the Geely uses halogen headlamps, while the top-spec Raize gets LED headlamps. Both also come standard with LED daytime running lamps and power-folding side mirrors, but only the Coolray Premium has automatic headlamps.

Inside, both of these subcompact models can comfortably seat up to five occupants. Both are also kitted out with automatic air-conditioning systems, leather-wrapped seats, a push-to-start button, as well as a digital gauge cluster.

Then again, the Coolray Premium does have some niceties that aren’t available on the Raize 1.0 Turbo. For one thing, the Coolray comes with cruise control, and a tilt and telescopic steering column. The Raize in turn has a tilt-only column.

Furthermore, their seat coverings are also different. For the Toyota model, its seats are clad with a blend of fabric and synthetic leather. Meanwhile, the Coolray’s seats are wrapped in PVC.
For entertainment, the Raize 1.0 Turbo gets a nine-inch touchscreen, while the Coolray gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen. While the Geely crossover’s head unit is larger, it lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto which are available on the Raize.

The Raize also gets six speakers, while the Coolray only has four. Last but not the least, the Coolray Premium also comes with a sunroof, which is absent on the Toyota Raize.

Under the hood, the top-spec Toyota Raize uses a turbocharged 1.0-liter inline-3 gasoline engine. At most, this three-banger can make up to 97 horsepower and 140 Nm of torque.
On the other side of the coin, the Geely Coolray uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-3 gasoline mill. At maximum, it can produce up to 177 horsepower and 255 Nm of torque.

With that, the Coolray is obviously much more powerful than the Raize. Both however are front-wheel-drive, using a MacPherson strut front suspension and a torsion beam rear suspension.
For transmissions though, the Raize uses a continuously variable transmission, whereas the Coolray utilizes a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Both do come with paddle shifters for their manual modes.

Moving on to brakes, the Coolray comes standard with disc brakes for all four wheels. Meanwhile, the Toyota Raize has front disc brakes and rear drum brakes, coupled with a hand-operated parking brake. In contrast, the Geely model has an electronic parking brake with auto-brake hold function.

Toyota Raize vs Geely Coolray Premium: Safety
For safety, both the Toyota Raize 1.0 Turbo and the Geely Coolray Premium are kitted out with six airbags. Both crossovers are also equipped with anti-lock braking with electronic brake-force distribution, stability control, parking sensors, a security alarm, engine immobilizer, and ISOFIX child seat anchors.
Both crossovers also have hill-start assist, though only the Coolray comes with hill-descent control. In turn, the top-spec Raize does come with blind-spot detection, and rear-cross traffic alert. It also has parking sensors for its front end.

Toyota Raize vs Geely Coolray Premium: Conclusion
From the price list shown above, one can see that the Geely Coolray sits at a much higher price point than the Toyota Raize. That’s reasonable since the Geely model does get significantly more power out of its inline-3 engine, which could make for a more exciting drive than the Toyota model.

On the flip-side, the Raize 1.0 Turbo CVT, despite being more affordable than the Coolray Premium, does offer a bit more in terms of safety.
In short, the Coolray Premium packs more power, while the top-spec Raize is more oriented towards safer drives.
