Geely Emgrand vs Toyota Vios: Subcompact sedan battle

In 2022, Geely Philippines is looking to enter the local subcompact sedan market segment. Its choice of model for the said segment is the Geely Emgrand.

Of note, one of the most popular subcompact sedans in the local market is the Toyota Vios. So which is better in terms of specs: is it the new, fresh-faced Emgrand or the experienced veteran which is the Vios?

To find out, we’ll be putting the Geely Emgrand Premium CVT against the Toyota Vios G CVT. We chose to compare the two because while the Toyota is a bit pricier, both models are quite similar in terms of mechanicals.

To put it bluntly, the Emgrand is far larger than the Vios. For that matter, the former is already a match against the Toyota Corolla Altis in terms of length. The Geely is even wider than the Vios’ larger brother, and it also has a significantly longer wheelbase compared to the Vios.

On the flipside though, the Vios offers a bit more in terms of ground clearance.

The Vios G also has CVT, but its manual mode is controlled by way of paddle shifters. On the Emgrand, its manual model uses the gear shift lever.

Geely Emgrand vs Toyota Vios: Conclusion

On paper, both the Geely Emgrand and the Toyota Vios can fulfill the duties of a comfortable and roomy daily driver. For the fun factor though, the Vios G might have an edge over the Emgrand Premium due to having paddle shifters. Then again, the Emgrand also has its charms by way of its sunroof.

A picture of the rear of the Geely Emgrand

Do you like the look of the Geely Emgrand's rear end?

There are some slight variances, but these two are also pretty much a match against each other when it comes to safety features. The smaller infotainment on the Vios G however, can be argued by some to be more capable.

But when it comes to pricing, it is obvious that the Vios G has a Php 62,000 premium over the Geely Emgrand Premium. Then again, this is unsurprising since Geely is looking to burst into the subcompact sedan scene.

In turn, the Toyota Vios has the advantage of having plenty of variants to choose from, some of which can match the Geely Emgrand in terms of price. It even has several variants equipped with a manual gearbox, which the Emgrand lacks.

Or do you prefer the rear of the Toyota Vios?

So which is better on paper? Let’s just say that they’re pretty much comparable. Well, save for the fact that the Geely model has a sunroof and cruise control, two features that are absent on any of the Vios trims.

We urge you to take these two on a test drive though, to really find out for yourself which one of these fits your needs.
