Honda’s compact sedan brings a mature look with more power.

There’s a new Civic in town, courtesy of Honda Philippines. This iteration is the latest milestone for the carmaker’s long-running nameplate, which traces its origins to 1972.

What started out as a subcompact hatchback eventually grew in dimensions, echoing its transformation from an economical commuter to a sportier model that’s still viable as a family ride. The latest version not only brings a new look and more performance across the board, it also doesn’t deprive even the base variant of advanced safety features.   

Let’s take a look at how much you’ll need to set aside in order to drive home the all-new Honda Civic.

The entry-level S stands at 4,678mm long, 1,802mm wide, and 1,415mm high, accompanied by a wheelbase of 2,735mm. Halogen headlamps flank the slim grille, complemented by L-shaped LED daytime running lights. Turn signals are mounted on the power-adjustable door mirrors. 

Five occupants can fit on fabric seats inside the cabin, with the single-zone automatic air-conditioning vents camouflaged within the honeycomb dashboard trim. Grab rails, bottle holders, and cupholders abound for convenience, while a 7-inch touchscreen head unit handles communications and infotainment through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

LED headlamps are standard on the flagship variant

Up to 176 horsepower and 240 Nm of torque are on tap from the 1.5-liter VTEC turbocharged gasoline engine, diverted to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission. The Honda Sensing driver-assist suite is standard , along with Ffour airbags, stability assist, hill-start assist, and anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution.  

The entry-level Honda Civic variant is priced at Php 1,290,000. Expect to pay Php 36,079 monthly on a 36-month contract and a 20-percent downpayment or Php 258,000. Extending the terms to 48 months while raising the cash to 30 percent or Php 387,000 results in a recurring amortization of Php 25,407, while going for 60 months will cost you regular payments of Php 21,768.

Stepping up to the midrange variant brings full LED headlamps and LED fog lamps, along with power-folding exterior mirrors. Interior amenities include front and rear door pockets, one-touch power windows for the front occupants, and a rear bench that split-folds 60/40 towards a generous 495-liter trunk. Second-row passengers benefit from rear air-conditioning vents.

A remote engine start function comes in handy for cooling down the cabin after parking the car under the hot sun, while speed sensing door locks secure passengers after the vehicle starts moving. The electronic parking brake features an Auto Brake Hold function for added convenience.

The Civic V trim carries a sticker price of Php 1,498,000, payable in 48 monthly installments of Php 29,503 on a 30 percent downpayment or Php 449,400. Raising the cash to 50 percent or Php 749,000 results in lower recurring payments of Php 21,074, while extending the loan to 60 months lowers the monthly bill to Php 18,055.

The top-spec Civic RS brings the bells and whistles, starting with full LED automatic headlamps, LED tail lamps, and rain-sensing wipers. An RS emblem can be found on the grille, while the door handles, sash garnish, and trunk spoiler are rendered in high-gloss black. A set of 18-inch RS matte black alloy wheels come into contact with the ground.

An electronic parking brake takes the place of the handbrake lever

Leather and suede interiors are the default, with drivers getting 8-way power-adjustable seats. A 10.2-inch digital display sits just beyond the leather steering wheel, while the 9-inch touchscreen offers wireless Apple CarPlay, patched to a 12-speaker Bose sound system. Wireless charging is also available for compatible smartphones.        

Onboard Honda Sensing features include Adaptive Cruise Control with Low Speed Follow, Lane Keeping Assist, Lead Car Departure Notification System, and a Road Departure Mitigation System, with Lane Departure Warning.

The 2023 Honda Civic is a compact, five-door sedan. It is now in its eleventh-generation. For the Philippine market, the Civic has a price range of Php 1,583,000 to Php 1,775,000. It has three variants consisting of the V Turbo, and the RS Turbo as the top-spec trim. All of them are equipped with the Honda Sensing driver assist safety suite, and all use a 1.5-liter turbocharged VTEC inline-4 gasoline engine capable of making up to 175 horsepower and 240 Nm of torque. All trims use a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
