Now under GR branding, the new 86 is an evolution of the modern Toyota-Subaru two-door coupe formula. It promises to deliver enhanced handling on the race track, as well as more smiles per kilometer on regular roads. Let’s check it out in detail.

Exterior

Up front, the all-new GR 86’s front end features plenty of functional vents. The rectangular one with downturned corners on the bumper is the largest. Two other vents on the sides allowing air flow around the wheels are thinner slits decorated with black-colored trim pieces.

Flanking each side of the GR 86’s front fascia are two sharp-looking headlamps with an auto-leveling function. These are then outlined by LED daytime running lights on their lower portions.

The sides of the car feature sills, as well as plenty of visible character lines on the wheel arches. Also present are power-folding side mirrors which, like the wheels as well as the window sills and pillars, are colored in black.

The rear’s styling was also improved upon by giving it a new pair of LED taillights, as well as a new trunk spoiler. Further down below is a black-colored rear diffuser and twin exhausts.

Completing the look of the manual variant is a set of 17-inch wheels. The automatic variant in turn rides on a set of 18-inch wheels.

Interior

Upon stepping inside the all-new GR 86, one will be greeted with a more streamlined-looking dashboard. It still features round air-conditioning vents, but the physical buttons appear to have a better arrangement.

Plenty of surfaces including the steering wheel, shift-boot, the hand-brake lever and some elements of the interior door cars are wrapped in leather. The seats meanwhile are clad in a combination of leather and suede for the automatic version. Many pieces are also provided with red contrast stitching, and GR badges.

Ease of use is also ensured by a push-to-start button, a digital gauge cluster, as well as a tilt and telescopic steering column. The occupants of this sports coupe are then kept comfortable by a dual-zone automatic air-conditioning system.

Tech and safety

Positioned slightly above the air-conditioning controls of the GR86 is an eight-inch touch screen head unit. For connectivity, this touchscreen comes with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, USB, and Bluetooth, as well as an auxiliary jack. Sound is then fed into the cabin by a six-piece speaker system.

The vehicle also gets two USB charging ports positioned on its console box, and a 12-volt accessory outlet is also provided.

For safety, the 2023 Toyota GR 86 gets what one would expect from a modern vehicle. It has stability control, anti-lock braking with electronic brake-force distribution, a rear parking camera, hill-start assist, and a total of seven airbags.

On the automatic version of this new coupe, its driver is then assisted by a number of advanced safety technologies. These include a pre-collision system, lane departure alert, dynamic radar cruise control, an adaptive front lighting system, blind-spot monitoring, and rear-cross traffic alert.

Both the manual and automatic versions do come with a limited slip differential as standard.

Engine

Under the hood of the 2023 Toyota GR 86 is a 2.4-liter boxer-four gasoline engine that’s capable of churning out 233 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque.

There are two transmission options for the new GR 86. There’s a six-speed automatic version that comes with a paddle-shifter manual-mode, and a six-speed manual gearbox version. Both of these send power to the car’s rear wheels.

For braking, both use ventilated disc brakes for all four wheels. The front end of the car then uses a MacPherson strut type suspension, while the rear utilizes a double-wishbone type suspension.

Pricing

Pricing for the 2023 Toyota GR 86 starts at Php 2,328,000 for the manual variant. The automatic variant meanwhile, starts at Php 2,499,000.

This new model also has a total of seven body color options. These are Ignition Red, Magnetite Gray Metallic, Crystal White Pearl, Ice Silver Metallic, Crystal Black Silica, Bright Blue, and Sapphire Blue Pearl.
