Toyota launched the Rangga concept at the 2023 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), which exudes an aura that’s similar to the Toyota Tamaraw.
The Toyota Rangga commercial vehicle concept
That’s because like the good ol’ Tamaraw, the Rangga concept that was featured at the Indonesian car event showed that it can take various bodies, each catering to a variety of purposes. There’s the Rannga Concept Mobile Cafe, an Ambulance, an EV mobile service vehicle, and even a pace car for auto racing. This last one is particularly interesting since pace cars do need to be beefy performance-wise.
This one comes in the form of a drop-side flat-bet truck
That said though, Toyota’s concept vehicle does carry a modern look. It’s still as squarish as its age-old ancestor, but it has some flavors of modern Toyota vehicles. For starters, the Rangga’s front fascia has some of the same boxy flavors as the FJ Cruiser. It also gets some unique-looking LED headlamps and a beefy angular front lower bumper.
For its technical specs, the platform that Rangga uses is the Toyota IMV 0. It's a single-cab pickup truck concept platform and it was engineered and developed by Toyota Daihatsu Engineering & Manufacturing.

Regarding engines though, Toyota didn’t share anything about that. Wishful thinking, however, would dictate that it could be utilizing a diesel just like the original Tamaraw. Then again, it wouldn't be a stretch to say that a future production model based on this could have a gasoline option or even a hybrid powertrain.

Speaking of which, Toyota Motor Philippines did share a few months ago that it is looking to revive the Tamaraw nameplate. The company’s commitment to this was showcased when it invested a whopping Php 4.4 billion into this project.

The question now is, will the future Tamaraw be based on the Toyota Rangga? We’ll have to wait a bit to know the answer to that. But, the Rangga concept is no doubt designed to cater to various mobility needs – intending to become a utilitarian vehicle, which is what the Tamaraw is known for, especially in the Philippines.
