Subaru announced its plan to launch an eight-electric vehicle (EV) lineup by the end of 2028.
Subaru Solterra
This means the Japanese automaker adjusted its target from producing four EVs by 2026 to adding four more in the following two years. No details regarding the upcoming Subaru-branded EVs yet but the company said the Subaru Solterra is already part of the first phase of rollouts.
One of the expected EVs would be an all-electric three-row EV. It could be built at Toyota’s Kentucky plant made possible by the partnerships between the two brands. Subaru is no stranger to producing three-row vehicles, though, as it offers the Ascent, also known as Evoltis in the Philippine market.
Another updated plan is to achieve 50 percent global EV sales in 2030 instead of selling 40 percent EVs and hybrids combined. In total, the brand is looking to sell 1.2 million units in the said year.
The Solterra will be followed by seven new EVs in the next five years
Subaru will produce the new EVs in Japan and North America. By 2025, the automaker will start its in-house BEV production in the Land of the Rising Sun with a capacity of 200,000 per year. Meanwhile, the US production would begin around 2027 or 2028, and the brand aims to sell 400,000 EVs in the region in 2028.
Panasonic will be a key partner of the automaker to bring the plan to fruition. The former will look to supply the latter with next-generation automotive cylindrical lithium-ion batteries. Subaru is expected to install Panasonic-sourced batteries for its EVs starting in the latter half of 2020.
Locally, Subaru Philippines has yet to launch an EV model in its lineup. Although, the Solterra already held its ASEAN debut when it was launched in Singapore in January 2023. For now, Filipino car buyers can have a go at Subaru ICE-powered cars like the WRX before the brand shifts its focus to electrification.
