Learn how to bike safely with this free manual from MMDA, SM

By the end of this year, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) plans to complete its 535-kilometer bike lane network not only in Metro Manila but also in Cebu and Davao. This will provide Filipino cyclists a safer road as it comes with barriers and markings to prevent other modes of transportation from using the bike lane.

SM Cares has partnered with DOTr and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to provide cyclists a Biker’s Manual which comes with information and education that are suited for the soon-to-be-completed bike lanes project. The Biker’s Manual can be downloaded for free on SM’s official website and has English and Tagalog versions.

SM is one with cyclists

According to SM’s Biker’s Manual, the use of personal safety gear and equipment is a must. As we all know, road accidents can be fatal especially on roads like EDSA where vehicles run fast. Some of the gear and equipment required include a helmet, face mask to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, bright clothing or reflectorized vest, and lamps and reflectors during night rides.

Before heading out, check the condition of the bicycle. Essential parts such as tire air pressure, brakes, tire wear, chains, and lighting systems must be in good condition. If not, you should have them repaired or replaced to ensure your safety on the go.

Be sure to know the guidelines for safer rides

While you are on the road, make sure to use road signals to alert motorists around you. Plan routes ahead of time to reduce travel time especially at noontime when the sun is up. Due to the ongoing global health crisis, SM Cares reminds cyclists to observe physical distancing to avoid the transmission of the virus.

There are three guidelines for bike lane use as per SM Cares’ Biker’s Manual. These guidelines include that it can only be used by bicycles and light mobility vehicles weighing not more than 100 kg, the maximum speed should be 25 kilometers per hour, and that counterflowing is prohibited.
