San Miguel Corporation (SMC) will be adding another expressway to its portfolio as it gets the go signal to build the Nasugbu-Bauan Expressway (NBEX).
San Miguel Corp. will have another expressway under its portfolio
The NBEX is a Php 44.77 billion project that is seen to provide a faster connection between the eastern and western portions of Batangas province. SMC signed a joint venture agreement (JVA) with the Batangas provincial government to design, build, operate, and maintain the expressway.
The JVA states that SMC Infrastructure has a 35-year concession over the 61-kilometer NBEX toll road. SMC and the Batangas provincial government signed the JVA in a ceremony held at the Balayan Government Center.
SMC President and CEO Ramon S. Ang believe that the NBEX will “further unlock the economic potential of Batangas.”
Ang added that the Batangas province has been a reliable partner of San Miguel since it is home to many of the company’s facilities. This is also one of the reasons why Batangas is “very close” to Ang.
“Batangas province has always been very close to my heart. It is home to many of our facilities. It has always been a valuable and reliable partner of San Miguel and as such, it is vital to our efforts to support our national economy and uplift the lives of many Filipinos through regional development,” Ang said.
The NBEX is a four-lane 61-kilometer toll road
With the JVA for the NBEX sealed, the SMC chief is glad to have another opportunity to strengthen the company’s collaboration with Batangas. In fact, Ang said that 70 percent of the NBEX’s profits once operational will be delivered to the local government. The funds will then be intended to provide “vital services” for the province’s constituents.
“We have committed to deliver 70% of the project’s profits to the local government, once its operational, to be used to provide vital services for our kababayans in the province. This will be key to furthering the growth of the province and improving lives and livelihood,” Ang shared.
The NBEX is a four-lane 61-kilometer toll road that will travel across towns of the Batangas’ first district. SMC said that it will make Nasugbu, Balayan, Lemery, Bauan, the City of Calaca, and other municipalities, more accessible.
The said expressway is expected to cut travel time between Nasugbu to Bauan, Batangas from 1.5 hours to just 45 minutes. Ang further shared that the NBEX will also reduce the usual five-hour trip to and from Manila to only two hours.
Joint venture agreement between San Miguel and Provincial Government of Cavite for the CBEX project
To put things in perspective, the NBEX runs parallel to Tagaytay-Nasugbu and Palico-Balayan highways. It is then connected to another upcoming SMC toll road, the Cavite-Batangas Expressway (CBEX).
The CBEX is a 27.06-kilometer toll road that will traverse through the municipalities of Silang, Amadeo, Tagaytay, Indang, Mendez and Alfonso in Cavite, and end in Nasugbu, Batangas. It is reportedly targeted to be completed by 2026.
