The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced that it will be suspending the Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program (UVVRP), also known as the number coding scheme, on specific holidays during the Christmas season.
Motorists can take a break from the number coding scheme on these dates
On its Facebook page, the agency said that the coding scheme will not be implemented on the following dates:
- December 24, Friday (Christmas Eve)
- December 30, Thursday (Rizal Day)
- December 31, Friday (New Year’s Eve)
There will also be no coding on both December 25 (Christmas Day) and January 1 (New Year’s Day), as both fall on a Saturday. The scheme is typically not enforced during weekends.
This means that vehicles with plate numbers ending in 7 and 8 are free to travel on Metro Manila’s major roads for the whole day of December 30. This also applies to vehicles whose plate numbers end in 9 and 0, as they will not be flagged down by traffic enforcers on December 24 and December 31. For all other vehicles, the number coding scheme will remain in force on their designated days, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
EDSA will be off-limits to light trucks on specific days, depending on the last digit of their plate number
The MMDA reimplemented the number coding scheme early this month after majority of the National Capital Region’s 17 mayors agreed to reinstate the traffic measure. It was previously suspended in March 2020 on account of lockdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A modified light truck ban is also being implemented on EDSA, the country’s busiest thoroughfare. This covers trucks that have a gross capacity of 4,500 kilograms and below or have at least six wheels, as they are not allowed anywhere on EDSA from Magallanes to North Avenue between 5:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., based on the last digit of their plate numbers. The ban is in effect from Monday to Friday, except during holidays.
