MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Don Artes thanked Abalos for being supportive despite resigning from his position as chief last year.

“When I told him that the MMDA will be having a Motorcycle Riding Academy, Secretary Abalos immediately responded by donating ten brand new motorcycles,” said Artes.

According to Abalos, the donated two-wheeled units should aid the Motorcycle Riding Academy in providing formal training to participants, particularly on practical training. The program will also provide theoretical training.

The Motorcycle Riding Academy aims not only to educate motorcyclists but also to reduce fatalities on the road involving two-wheeler users. This is a timely program considering more motorists are plying the roads including EDSA.

Based on data from the MMDA Metro Manila Accident Reporting and Analysis System (MMARAS), there were 2,269 pedestrians who were hit from January to August this year. That number is close to the 3,161 pedestrians who got into a road incident last year.

“The number of those using motorcycles is increasing, so are the fatalities. This Academy will provide motorcycle riders [with] necessary riding and basic emergency response skills and we hope to replicate it in other local government units to lessen motorcycle-related deaths and accidents,” said Abalos.

Apart from Abalos, Honda Philippines, Inc. (HPI) donated an initial batch of 21 motorcycles to the MMDA. The brand will donate 29 more units for the program. Reports also state that Senator Christopher “Bong” Go donated 10 motorcycles to the agency.

The Motorcycle Riding Academy is scheduled to open on September 27. It will be located at a vacant property of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) along Julia Vargas Avenue, corner of Meralco Avenue, Pasig City.
