One of the big developments in the auto industry is Lotus transitioning to electric vehicles, recently showing patent images of its Type 132 battery-powered crossover. Apparently, the model will be launched with a more mainstream name: the Eletre, with a matching teaser video released online.
Lotus Eletre is coming to life
The brief 15-second clip simply shows the Lotus wordmark set against a background of the company’s trademark yellow hue. This transitions with a glitch effect into the futuristic-looking typeface spelling out the Eletre nameplate, with the final words promising that the model is “coming to life” on March 29, 2022 in London, some three hours away from the Lotus facilities in Hethel, England.
A more complete perspective of the Eletre was already visible to the public, as patent images of the vehicle surfaced online earlier this month. Some of the more notable design details (apart from the crossover’s size) are a chiseled hood inspired by the Emira and Evija sports cars, flush door handles that pop out for ingress, exterior mirrors cameras in lieu of conventional side mirrors, and a roof-mounted lidar sensor.
The Eletre was previously known as the Type 132 in patent images
Alloy wheels bearing a turbine design seem like an attempt to offset the Eletre’s generous proportions. Interior details are scarce, but a flat-topped steering wheel and digital instrument panel have been hinted at, along with onboard 5G connectivity.
As the first model riding on the Lotus Premium Architecture, the Eletre is rumored to come with twin electric motors powered by a selection of lithium-ion battery packs. Up to 750 horsepower is expected to be on tap, with acceleration from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in under three seconds and a maximum range of almost 600 kilometers.
A massive infotainment head unit has been hinted at
The Eletre will headline the first batch of electric vehicles from Lotus. An electric four-door sedan codenamed the Type 133 is scheduled for launch next year, followed by the Type 134 crossover in 2024 and the Type 135 sports car in 2025.
