The three-month closure will make way for necessary repairs.

The City of Manila has announced the full closure of the Lagusnilad Vehicular Underpass which is located just in front of the Manila City Hall.

According to a post from the city’s official social media pages, the closure will be imposed until September 2023. This was decided upon to make way for the rehabilitation of the said underpass.

To ensure the continuous flow of traffic in the area, the Manila City government has advised motorists to seek alternate routes in lieu of the closed underpass.

Those who are bound to Taft Avenue are directed to take a right to Padre Burgos Avenue, make a right to Round Table, then cross Padre Burgos Ave. again to Maria Orosa Street. After plying Maria Orosa, make a left turn towards Kalaw Ave., then take a right to Taft Ave.

Regardless of the alternate route, netizens and several news reports have already observed heavy traffic flow in the area. A report from ABS-CBN for instance, has shown that even pedestrians are likewise affected by the closure.

This might have something to do with the fact that the area in question regularly sees high pedestrian and vehicular traffic, even without road repairs and closures. After all, Lagusnilad Underpass is adjacent to a number of notable locations.

As mentioned, there’s the Manila City Hall, the National Museum of Fine Arts, the Hero’s Park, etc. A number of schools like the Philippine Normal University, Universidad De Manila, and the Manila High School, among others are within walking distance of the underpass as well.

Do be aware that the full closure of the Lagusnilad Underpass will take a total of three months. So if you’re one of the hundreds who regularly pass through Lagusnilad, it might be a good idea to remember the alternate routes mentioned above. Also, it might be wise to start your commute earlier than usual.
