Automakers continue to innovate different parts of a car to improve road safety. Over at Hyundai, the company developed headlights that are said to prevent nighttime accidents.
Hyundai has developed a new headlight capable of projecting road signs
Dubbed the HD Lighting System technology, it was delivered by Hyundai Mobis, the Korean automaker’s parts and service arm. This new lighting system uses a digital micromirror device (DMD), a collection of tiny mirrors that act as a reflector to project desired shapes and symbols. According to the Korean car maker, the DMD is formed by microscopic mirrors measuring just 0.01 mm.
In addition, the system also has about 25,000 micro LEDs with a width of 0.04 mm. That’s 250 times as many LEDs installed in mass-produced LED headlights today.
How the HD Lighting System works is when it projects relevant road signs in text or shapes depending on the situation ahead. For example, if there is a road construction ahead, it will project a “men at work” sign. The technology can also project crosswalk signs, aiding pedestrians when crossing a street.
It aims to make roads safer for pedestrians as well
The HD Lighting System uses a camera sensor and GPS navigation to enable the function. It projects the road signs that are 1,500 mm big and 15,000 mm ahead of the driver.
This is a similar technology to what Ford unveiled last year. The Blue Oval company calls it High-Resolution Headlights, capable of using the headlights as projectors. Mercedes-Benz also showcased a similar technology called Digital Light headlight at the Geneva Motor Show back in 2018.
Hyundai said that the technology can improve visibility and prevent accidents at night.
“In the era of autonomous driving, software technology capable of integrating numerous auto components into a single device will be more important than ever. Hyundai Mobis is taking the lead in [the] development of cutting-edge lamps and securing technology capable of controlling them,” said a Hyundai Mobis representative.
The HD Lighting System isn’t the only technology recently coming out from Hyundai Mobis. Last April 2023, the company unveiled its rollable display, which has four modes including the Hidden Mode that tucks the screen in the case.
