The performance-focused EV is slated to debut this July.

Hyundai N, the Korean automaker’s motorsports division, is testing the Ioniq 5 N in extreme winter conditions at the brand’s Mobis Proving ground in Arjeplog, Sweden.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is an all-electric vehicle (EV) fitted with performance-enhancing features brought by the N badge. Hyundai Motor has combined the model’s Electrified-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) with N’s motorsport-bred technologies to deliver one true-performance EV.

“Just as our N models are honed at the sharp corners of the Nürburgring, our N models are also honed at the sharp corners and icy surfaces of our proving ground in Arjeplog, ensuring maximum performance in the most extreme weather conditions,” Till Wartenberg, Vice President of N Brand Management and Motorsport sub-division at Hyundai Motor Company.

Part of the upgrades includes an optimized E-GMP dual-motor architecture. This makes the Hyundai Ioniq 5 the first in N’s portfolio to come with an all-wheel-drive (AWD).

Data gathered from Hyundai’s participation at the World Rally Championship (WRC) are used to develop the Ioniq 5 N’s AWD system. Specifically, the automaker runs with the Hyundai i20 N WRC Rally 1 car, an AWD hybrid hot hatch. Since Hyundai joined WRC in 2015, the motorsport team has won two world championships.

Handling is improved with the addition of the N Drift Optimizer. This integrates front and rear torque distribution, torque rate, suspension stiffness, steering effort, and the e-LSD (electronic-Limited Slip Differential).  The e-LSD enhances handling by delivering extra torque to a wheel, creating better grip performance.

Working in tandem with the e-LSD is the N Torque Distribution, which has been optimized for different drive modes. It allows the driver to select the torque level for both the front and rear wheels.

“We are proud to demonstrate the Ioniq 5 N perfectly meets our broad performance criteria, ensuring N Brand success as our first EV production N model,” added Wartenberg.

Hyundai will disclose more details about the Ioniq 5 N closer to its global debut scheduled in July.

The performance EV will come out in metal this July

Locally, we could see the performance EV following Hyundai Motor Philippines, Inc. (HMPH) President Dong Wook Lee’s statement shared with us during the brand’s relaunch last year. He mentioned that it is more likely that the company will bring N EVs instead of N models with an internal combustion engine (ICE).
